Need help finding an affordable handicap vehicle?

At Classic Vans, we make shopping online for a van extremely easy, but we understand that it can be challenging to decide exactly what disability van will best serve your needs. When it comes to shopping for the perfect handicap vehicle, the best way to approach the process is to begin by thinking of exactly what type of van would make your transportation as effortless as possible:

Would you prefer the driving ease of a smaller handicap van? A Toyota Sienna or Chrysler Pacifica might be a good choice.

Handicap van FAQ: Common questions and answers

Does Medicare pay for a handicap van?

Typically, Medicare doesn’t cover the purchase of a new or used wheelchair van because Medicare doesn’t consider them “medically necessary” (but try telling that to wheelchair users, their families and their caregivers). While Medicare will pay for power wheelchairs and scooters, unfortunately it will not cover personal mobility vehicles in most cases.

For this reason, it’s important to work with a handicap van specialist who can help you secure financing, grants, subsidies and other financial assistance so that you can purchase an affordable disability van that fully meets your needs.

What is the best handicap van?

Determining which vehicle is best for you ultimately depends on your individual needs and wants. Fortunately, we have a great selection of disability vans for sale! Our mobility van specialists can help walk you through the decision-making process and show you top-of-the-line new and used models in terms of safety, comfort, luxury and functionality.

Can I deduct buying a handicap van from my taxes?

As is the case when buying a standard vehicle, the cost of purchasing a disability van generally is not deductible under current U.S. tax law. However, you may be able to deduct the cost of installing custom modifications for medical purposes as part of your medical expenses. For example, the cost of installing a wheelchair lift/ramp or special hand controls may be deductible.

According to the IRS (RS Publication 502), tax deductions for “the cost of special hand controls and other special equipment installed in a car for the use of a person with a disability” are permitted. These deductions, which are referred to by the IRS as “special design,” won’t cover the cost of the “regular car,” meaning the chassis cost won’t be covered. But you can deduct the difference of a “car specially designed to hold a wheelchair.”

We recommend meeting with a tax professional to determine if you are eligible for deductions when purchasing a disability van—and if so, what information you’ll need to file this deduction with the IRS. They can also help you find additional tax deductions and savings you may qualify for.

Why are handicap vans so expensive?

Many brand new disability vans are indeed more costly than standard vehicles for a number of reasons.

For starters, the cost of specialty handicap-accessible equipment that must be installed is in addition to the cost of the standard vehicle chassis itself. Such conversion equipment can be costly, and includes the wheelchair ramp or lift, driver assistance controls, reinforcing the vehicle structure, lowering the vehicle floor or raising the roof—to name a few.

There’s also the cost of labor to install and test this equipment to consider. There aren’t a lot of trained and certified professionals who are qualified to do this work, which raises the cost of their services. In addition, mobility vans must undergo stringent government safety tests in order to be certified to be ready for general public use.

At Classic Vans, we recognize that buying a vehicle is one of the biggest purchases most people make in their lifetime. For this reason, we do our best to keep the cost of our new and used disability vans as low as possible. We’ll work with you to find an affordable vehicle that meets your needs.

How does a wheelchair van work?

A wheelchair-accessible van makes it possible for wheelchair users to regain their freedom and mobility by converting a standard full-size van or minivan to meet their custom needs. This is accomplished by installing wheelchair lifts or ramps, increasing the interior space to fit equipment, adding safety features to keep wheelchair users secure while driving, and installing mobility driving aids.

Every vehicle works slightly differently depending on the custom features you have installed and which types of mobility equipment you choose. At Classic Vans, we would be happy to walk you through all the features and components of your chosen disability van to make sure you are ready to take your new or used vehicle for a spin.

What should I look for when buying a handicap van?

The journey of selecting a handicap-accessible vehicle is more fraught with decisions, choices and options than ever before. With countless assistive features and equipment available, it’s vital that you know what to look for when shopping for the best disability van for you.

By considering the following tips when choosing your perfect vehicle, you can avoid some of the stress and hassle:

  • Find the right fit. Buying a custom van is your chance to finally get a vehicle that has everything you need and want. Take the time to identify your preferences when it comes to vehicle features such as interior head height, the width of your wheelchair, entry/exit doors and systems (ramp vs. lift, manual vs. automatic, side-entry vs. rear-entry), weight requirements, safety features, etc.
  • Think about your budget. It’s also important to consider your budget when shopping for a disability van. Will you require financing? Are you eligible for grants, subsidies or other financial support? The affordability of a handicap van is a crucial factor to consider, and knowing your budget can help you narrow down options.
  • Choose a reputable dealer. There are countless dealers out there that sell mobility vans, but not all have your best interests in mind. Take your time to do research on a potential dealer by reading customer reviews and their BBB rating. It’s important to find an accredited disability van dealer whom you trust to help you make this big decision.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We get it—making such a big decision can be stressful and confusing. That’s why we encourage our customers to tap into our expertise in this industry by asking us questions throughout the buying journey. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask us. That’s what we’re here for!
